Mentoring to Promote that Feeling of Belonging

Mentoring, club growth, the feeling of belonging

Interactions that create small moments of social connection (Familiar relations) (Belonging Cues)

  • Close physical proximity, often in circles.
  • Lots of eye contacts
  • Physical touch (handshakes, fist bumps, hugs)
  • Lots of short energetic exchanges (better than long speeches)
  • High levels of mixing: everyone talks to everyone
  • Few interruptions
  • Lots of questions
  • Intensive, active listening
  • Humor, laughter, Small attentive courtesies (thank you's, opening doors, etc)                (The Culture Code book by Daniel Coyle. Page 7)

Questions we silently ask:

Are we safe here? What's our future with these people?

Belonging Cues posess 3 basic qualities:

1. Energy: Investing in the exchanges. Good chemistry.

2. Individualization: Each member is treated as unique and valued.

3. Future Orientation: Signals the relationships will continue although can evolve.

Information Content versus Social Signals

Social Signals are better predictors than facts alone.. Before those members were strangers but now they are on your team. Let them know you need their feedback!
